About this item

25 popes consider St. Thomas Aquinas the Church's preeminent theologian because he saw truths about God, our Faith, and the Christian life which had never been seen before.

But do you have time to read the 3,000 pages in his Summa Theologica? Do you struggle to understand the abstract theological terms he uses in On Being and Essence?

Perhaps you, like so many of us, desire to be taught by such a great philosopher as Aquinas, but feel he is well beyond your reach. Not anymore.

In The One-Minute Aquinas, veteran Catholic author Dr. Kevin Vost provides you with simple, readable explanations of St. Thomas's life-giving wisdom.

In this book's lucid pages, you'll read small, digestible portions of St. Thomas's answers to questions such as...

  • Why do souls need the sacraments?
  • Why didn't Jesus write the Bible himself?
  • What are simple proofs of God's existence?
  • What is heaven, and what is it not?
  • Why did Jesus allow himself to be crucified?
  • How can I grow quickly in virtue?
  • Who are the angels and what are their powers?
  • What is God's power and its limits?
  • Why did God become man?
  • Why did Jesus allow himself to be tempted?

And you'll learn countless, but quick, refutations to the relativistic and secular ideas that are so destructive to our culture today.

We're not all called to be intellectuals, but we are called to have an ever deeper understanding of our Faith.

"Most modern readers never discover Aquinas because they are put off by the sheer bulk of his writings. Kevin Vost has done such readers a favor by serving up the sain't arguments in bite-sized chunks that anyone can digest."

"It takes the reader by the hand, step by step, from confusion to clarity, from chaos to order, and from our simplest beginning, our search for happiness, to our final end, eternal union with God. You don't need a philosophy degree or an I.Q. of 165 to profit from this book. You need only an open mind and an honest, searching heart."

"For clarity choose Aquinas. For clarity on Aquinas choose Kevin Vost. Ideal for anyone who wants to cut through the silly sentimentality of modern religion and work up a brain sweat with some sound and serious thinking."

Substantial error on the nature of Christ
In the chapter "Why did God become man?" Dr. Vost asks, "How can Jesus Christ be one person with two natures and one will?" In that section, he writes: "our Catholic faith holds that Jesus Christ is one person with two natures and one will." (p. 205) That is wrong. In the creed of the Third Council of Constantinople, the Council Fathers "declare that in [Our Lord Jesus Christ] are two natural wills and two natural operations indivisibly, inconvertibly, inseparably, inconfusedly," and anyone who disagrees with this teaching is anathematized. Obviously, St. Thomas agrees with this Church teaching: "it must be said that there are two wills in Christ, i.e. one human, the other Divine." ST III, q. 18, a. 1.

A Must For Everyone
This is the best book on Thomas Aquinas that I have ever read! It is easy to read and I was able to progress through the pages rather rapidly. A real page turner and well written for those with busy schedules and little time for themselves. Well worth the read.

Aquinas For Everyone
This book is actually way more fun that any non-fiction book ought to be! But that's Kevin: a man who walks the talk and shares it with all in an inviting, warm way. If anyone is going to convert lost souls, it will be Kevin through his work as an author. He is intelligent without being brash; he is a gift to those of us who wish to know the likes of an Aquinas because Vost can present the works of such a thinker in a way that you and I get it without bringing it down a level. As I read this book it becomes apparent that what Vost does--and what is so incredibly evident in this excellent book--is raises us, the readers, up to a level that we did not know we could achieve.

VERY accessible introduction to Aquinas
I have read four other books by Dr. Vost - Memorize the Faith, Unearthing Your Ten Talents, From Atheism to Catholicism, and Fit for Eternal Life. One Minute Aquinas is his best work yet. Among all of the books I have read seeking to provide a lay person's introduction to Aquinas, this one is the most accessible.

Amazingly thorough crash-course in Thomas' theology
This book is a wonderful contribution to the growing body of literature dedicated to equipping the laity for the New Evangelization. Pope St. Pius X stated his conviction that, "a man can derive more profit from [Thomas'] books in one year than from a lifetime spent pondering the philosophy of others." If you are looking to not just meet the Angelic Doctor but to spend time meditating upon his Summa, then I can't think of a better resource than Dr. Kevin Vost's "The One-Minute Aquinas."
