About this item

Age Range: 8 and up

Dear Children:

"The Gospels are four very short books that tell you about our Lord's life. You can read them quite fast. The reason the same story takes so much longer to tell in this book is that the men who wrote the Gospels just went straight on and hardly even stopped to explain anything. They couldn't be expected to know how we would live, and that we would have forgotten how people dressed and spoke and built houses, and the other customs they had in those days. So in this book, I have to stop and explain all the time, but after you've read it, the explaining will have been done, and you can start reading the Gospels yourself any time you want."

So says the author of this rich retelling of the life of Christ, a tale that possesses the interest, lucidity, and dignity that marks the best of books for children.

Marigold Hunt begins with Adam and Eve and goes quickly through the Old Testament to Jesus, whom she presents simply but not trivially, so children encounter Him in His goodness, His suffering, and His majesty.

Hunt speaks in words and phrases that young children understand and explains terms they may not know. She includes devotions from the Bible (such as the Magnificat, the Beatitudes, and the Canticle of Zachary) along with many of Christ's parables (which she explains).

A Life of Our Lord for Children will make sense of Scripture for your children and help them be more attentive during Mass when they hear the same tales directly from the Gospels.

Wonderful book
This is one of the best resources for introducing your children to Christ I've ever seen. Our country is in desperate need of help from the Lord, and the more people we can bring to the Lord so they to can feel his love for them, the better all our lives will be. I recommend that every parent in this country buy this book and read it to their children as soon as possible! We need God's grace now more than ever!

Beautiful book. Our favorite book so far this year!
We love, love, love this book! The language is beautiful and easy to understand, but the author does not "dumb it down" like many children's books. I really appreciate that aspect. My children are really absorbing a lot from this book, and honestly, so am I! This will definitely remain on our shelf as a favorite to read again and again.

Great book- my kids love it and her other books as well.
I would definitely recommend this book for anyone wanting to help their children understand the Gospels more. Marigold Hunt gives great historical background and explanation in an engaging and entertaining way. Her books bring the Bible to life. My children say that her book makes everything make sense. They love it and can't wait to read the next book about Acts called "The First Christians."

The whole family will enjoy this!
I was blessed to have received "A Life of Our Lord for Children" as a gift to read to my children. They are always eager for me to read from this book, and I have found that I have learned a few things myself. Marigold Hunt writes in a way to make it easy for the young children to grasp the content, but without boring my older children either (ages 3-11). I recently gave this book to another family as a gift, so that they can be blessed too.

A child's introduction to the Gospels
I was so pleased to find this book. Though written in 1939, the language is clear and straight-forward and accessible. On the back is a note from the author - I assume it was originally a preface. Hunt writes, "....The reason the same story takes so much longer to tell in this book is that the men who wrote the Gospels just went straight on and hardly even stopped to explain anything. They couldn't be expected to know how differently we would live, and that we would have forgotten how people dressed and spoke and built their houses, and the other customs they had in those days. So in this book, I have to stop and explain all the time, but after you have read it, a good deal of the explaining will have been done, and you can start reading the Gospels yourself anytime you want." Well, my own kiddo has renewed her interest in the Bible after just a few pages with this book. Its retelling is gentle and warm, and the artwork is just enough to lend interest.
