Around the Year with the VonTrapp Family

About this item

In this joyful and charming book, Maria von Trapp (from The Sound of Music) unveils for you the year-round Christian traditions she loved – traditions that created for her large family a warm and inviting Catholic home and will do the same for yours.

Here are the songs they sang for feasts and holidays, as well as Maria’s personal recipes for traditional holiday foods. Here are stories and games to delight your children, and countless other ways to turn events such as anniversaries, baptisms, graduations, birthdays, wedding receptions, and even funerals into feasts celebrated in the Lord.

Most people only know the young Maria from The Sound of Music; few realize that in subsequent years, as a pious wife and a seasoned Catholic mother, Maria gave herself unreservedly to keeping her family Catholic by observing in her home the many feasts of the Church’s liturgical year, with poems and prayers, food and fun, and so much more!

With the help of Maria von Trapp, you, too, can provide Christian structure and vibrancy to your home. Soon your home will be a warm and loving place, an earthly reflection of our eternal home.

"Around the Year With the Von Trapp Family is stunningly produced and one of the coolest guides to the liturgical year I’ve seen. It includes tons of traditional practices, crafts, songs, and more. It’s great for any family looking to introduce more traditions into their liturgical year."

"I am so impressed with this exquisite and unique book written by Maria Augusta Von Trapp. It is an exceptional treasure to be sure. I’m grateful that the author took time in writing such an all encompassing book so that we can be privy to her family’s heartfelt Catholic traditions in celebrating feasts and seasons. I love that Maria compared the Austria traditions with ones she carried on in their home in Stowe, Vermont. A delightful read (which includes music, recipes, illustrations, history, and more), as well as an inspiring encouragement for today’s Catholic families."

A nice old-fashioned book.
I love this book by Maria Von Trapp. It is very comfortable and has nice ideas to celebrate holidays in a home centered manner and includes very good recipes.

The book is filled with recipes, songs (musical score and lyrics), and suggestions for liturgical living, from Advent to Christ the King, and many of the saint feast days in between. There are lovely illustrations done by Rosemary Trapp and Nikolaus E. Wolff. I was very impressed with the book itself in terms of its presentation. It’s laid out beautifully, with holly embellishments and colored headers, along with a two-column text layout. It is not a small book, but more of a coffee-table book. It is available on Kindle, but I highly recommend purchasing a physical copy. It was a joy to read both visually and in terms of the content.

I LOVE this book!
I actually checked the original book out from a library 26 years ago. I am a big fan of the von Trapps and have read a lot about the true story that inspired the big hit movie, The Sound of Music. . God surely brought them to the public's attention as a blessing and example for the world. This book is an inside view of what made this famous family tick: union with God lived out in the Catholic faith. I was intrigued by holidays not typically celebrated today and by their family retreat. What a great idea! We could all use a little more von Trapp in our lives!
