About this item

In this joyful and charming book, Maria von Trapp (from The Sound of Music) unveils for you the year-round Christian traditions she loved – traditions that created for her large family a warm and inviting Catholic home and will do the same for yours.

Here are the songs they sang for feasts and holidays, as well as Maria’s personal recipes for traditional holiday foods. Here are stories and games to delight your children, and countless other ways to turn events such as anniversaries, baptisms, graduations, birthdays, wedding receptions, and even funerals into feasts celebrated in the Lord.

Most people only know the young Maria from The Sound of Music; few realize that in subsequent years, as a pious wife and a seasoned Catholic mother, Maria gave herself unreservedly to keeping her family Catholic by observing in her home the many feasts of the Church’s liturgical year, with poems and prayers, food and fun, and so much more!

With the help of Maria von Trapp, you, too, can provide Christian structure and vibrancy to your home. Soon your home will be a warm and loving place, an earthly reflection of our eternal home.

A Very Good Place to Start
As our world continues to pick up the pace with more technology, industry, and construction, it is increasingly difficult to run into the hills and sing of how they are alive with the sound of music. Enter Maria von Trapp. This lovely woman is not just a character in a hit musical. She truly lived, and she knew how to live well. Born in Austria, Maria lived through both world wars. Throughout her life, she held her faith close to her heart, and lived it out beautifully through rich liturgical celebrations and traditions that span centuries. Then, she wrote this book. Around the Year with the Von Trapp Family takes you to the very beginning of the liturgical year, a very good place to start, and provides recipes, music, games, and stories to supplement your family’s journey of faith. This beautiful hardcover copy is laid out with gorgeous illustrations. A gift from one generation to the next. An excellent addition to any home.

Impressive!
The book is filled with recipes, songs (musical score and lyrics), and suggestions for liturgical living, from Advent to Christ the King, and many of the saint feast days in between. There are lovely illustrations done by Rosemary Trapp and Nikolaus E. Wolff. I was very impressed with the book itself in terms of its presentation. It’s laid out beautifully, with holly embellishments and colored headers, along with a two-column text layout. It is not a small book, but more of a coffee-table book. It is available on Kindle, but I highly recommend purchasing a physical copy. It was a joy to read both visually and in terms of the content.

I LOVE this book!
I actually checked the original book out from a library 26 years ago. I am a big fan of the von Trapps and have read a lot about the true story that inspired the big hit movie, The Sound of Music. . God surely brought them to the public's attention as a blessing and example for the world. This book is an inside view of what made this famous family tick: union with God lived out in the Catholic faith. I was intrigued by holidays not typically celebrated today and by their family retreat. What a great idea! We could all use a little more von Trapp in our lives!

Helps Celebrate the Liturgical Year & Your Family's Special Life Moments
My first impression upon receiving it was that this is one substantial book. It is beautifully printed and meant to be kept for years, and used all through the year. I love Maria's writing. I've read her other books, and she has an exuberant writing style that is natural, pulls you in, and makes you want to be right there in the action. The contents follow the liturgical year, explaining the seasons and why we celebrate them. Each feast day is lovingly explored with songs and music, recipes, and simple crafts, along with wonderful memories of Catholic family life in Austria before WWII. A separate section elaborates on how to celebrate each Sacrament within the family, anniversaries, birthdays and other special family moments, including how to handle sickness and death within the family. There is a definite focus on the spiritual life and the life beyond. I found the section on how they actually lived Sundays to be particularly significant in our culture that treats Sunday with no sense of the sacred. What is so lovely about this book is that Maria explains the faith and how to incorporate it into your family’s life so beautifully. It makes one long for a time past when faith was seamlessly woven into the tapestry of the community. This book helps you weave it into your own family’s life now.
