About this item

During the year after giving birth, some mothers struggle to recover from the wearying days, sleepless nights, and assorted other troubles – mental, physical, and spiritual – that childbirth brings.

If you’re one such woman, know that you don’t stand alone. Author Allison Auth has experienced all these woes and more, growing wise along the way in the art of postpartum life – a healing art she illuminates and shares here with you.

In these lively, plainspoken pages, Auth introduces you to powerful exercise, health, and nutrition practices that can relieve – and often even eliminate – most of the troubles you might suffer during that difficult year after your baby is born. These practices will help you find the energy, balance, and healing – physical and spiritual – that you need to care confidently for your loved ones, your home, and your soul. Auth will even teach you a surefire way to slay, once and for all, the toxic temptation to compare yourself unfavorably with that “perfect mom” next door, whose hair is always tidy, clothes neat, and house clean.

Here, you’ll also learn:

  • How to deal with unfulfilled expectations when your careful birth plans go awry
  • How vitamins, sleep, and exercise can help you sustain your loving relationship with your spouse – and with God!
  • How to deal with Natural Family Planning uncertainties during the year after giving birth
  • How to overcome self-directed negativity about your post-pregnancy body
  • What to do when even small household tasks seem overwhelming
  • How to combat discouragement when your postpartum spiritual life grows feeble
  • How to open yourself to friendship with other new mothers (and why you must)
  • Why sustained self-care is critical to your well-being . . . and your family’s
  • Three ways to weather the stages of your child’s development and the seasons of family life
  • And much more!

Whether you’re struggling through a “dark night” of genuine postpartum depression or simply enduring a frustrating roller coaster of emotions, Auth’s wealth of experience and bright wisdom will help you finally experience what you’ve been longing for since before your baby’s birth: the inexpressible joys of motherhood.

"After reading Allison's book, Baby and Beyond, all I could think was where was this book six kids ago? My first four post-partum experiences were textbook fantastic, and then babies five and six came along. I kept thinking I should've had it figured out by then, but I didn't. For any mom who feels overwhelmed, less-than, stressed or anxious about all the new changes and challenges that come with new life, gift her this book. You can thank me later. Brava, Allison, on writing the book we didn't know we needed!"

Allison speaks truthfully and with such vulnerability, you can't help but feel that you know her personally by the end of the book. Her willingness to share her own story allows her to shed light on many topics that women are often afraid to bring up for fear of judgement, criticism or simply out of embarrassment. Allison unabashedly discusses the ins and outs of the roller coaster ride that is the postpartum period and does so in such a comfortable and easy way that it feels like the words of a friend.

The beauty in Allison's suffering is that it led her to write this book to help others
Full disclosure: I'm the author's sister. You might be thinking "that makes her biased in favor of the book" but I'm the older, critical sister so if anything I'm biased against. However I am amazed at what a great book this is. Allison is so honest in sharing her birth and postpartum stories that she wins you over. Unlike some other pregnancy and childbirth books that I've read, this book doesn't TELL you what to do and leave you feeling like nothing you do is right. Instead Allison shares what she's been through and what she's learned and leaves you feeling like you are not alone, that someone else understands, and she leaves you feeling hopeful. When reading her stories I was sorry that I hadn't called and warned her or been more helpful. However I was lost in my own postpartum depletion and depression. Thankfully Allison hasn't kept her experiences to herself but has learned from them and shared this book so that other mothers can enjoy motherhood more and recover better.

This is a must read for new moms to help them through the thick of the changes a new baby brings and will provide them tips to help navigate through their post childbirth woes. It is also a great read for experienced mom, like me. Reading this after my fourth baby, I related to so many of Allison's stories and emotions she felt in her postpartum time. Her vulnerability when she shares her stories, provided comfort in feeling that I was not the only one who struggled in those same ways. The knowledge of being depleted in vital nutrients, tips to be forgiving of yourself, and also helping me to realize that this is a season to grow closer to the Lord really struck me in this book. Thank you Allison for your time given to this book. It was a gift to read this in the thick of my 4th postpartum haze. I will be implementing what I have read to help not only myself, but other moms in this season of life.

I thought I didn't need this book, but I DID!
If I am being totally honest, this is a book I didn't think I needed. I've been pregnant 7 times, given birth to 5 healthy children, and never suffered with postpartum depression or anything beyond the "normal" realities of birthing children. Yet, I couldn't put the book down. I couldn't believe how much I loved reading what she was saying and how much it resonated with me. It was unexpected - I was (pleasantly and genuinely) surprised at home much I loved what the author wrote. Her clear and concise writing style made it an easy read to get through and her purpose and point are something every mother should read.

Auth's debut book is a must-read for Catholic moms who are expecting or have recently had a baby. It reads like a conversation over coffee with a sister: everything you wanted to know about the postpartum experience, including sex and NFP, that nobody ever told you. This book certainly informs and entertains and will help many mothers on their journeys.
