About this item

Shocked to find corruption widespread in the ranks of their shepherds today, too many good Catholics are tempted to leave the Church, unaware that ever since the days when Jesus’ own treasurer, Judas Iscariot, had his hand in the till, the Good Shepherd and His faithful followers have regularly been betrayed by bad shepherds.

In these eye-opening pages, Church historian Rod Bennett introduces a number of those bad shepherds, including Bishop Eusebius of Nicomedia, who regularly sold out the Church to the Roman emperor; Pope Stephen VII, who so hated his late predecessor that he had him dug up, put on trial, and flung into the Tiber; Benedict IX, who bought and sold the papacy (twice!); and Pope John XII, whose debauchery rivaled that of the corrupt emperor Caligula.

Those were very bad shepherds indeed, but while they did the Devil’s work, good Catholics not only survived — they thrived.

They outlasted their bad shepherds, preserved in their ranks the Faith of our fathers, and served in each instance as the foundation for a cleansing of the House of God and a vigorous renewal of the Faith.

These enlightening pages demonstrate that it can happen again!

Good Church History
Lets us recognize that this is not the only time in history that we have been challenged by immoral leaders in our Church. Motivates the laity to demand action against the bishops who, like 500 years ago, are up to their eyeballs in personal sins and covering for the sins of others.

Highly recommend
I highly recommend this book for the encouragement it will give you to persevere and hold tightly to the true teachings of the Church during the current crisis we face. Our prayers and our insistence that the Church be purified and renewed in truth and justice will play an important part in that coming about, as it has in every other crisis the Church has faced in her 2,000 year history.

Easy to read, important to know
Rod Bennett has written parts of Church history in a very readable way, even including some humor. When he talks about the villain shepherds, he is not demeaning or nasty. Rather, he presents information and even explains some of the historical and cultural context that contributed to popes, bishops and priests going bad. He expresses compassion where that is called for. It seemed to me like a fair and accurate rendering of the history it presented.

Good writing
The authors writing style is at a level that is educational and meant to inform the reader. He doesn't wag his intellectual finger at you but engages the topic at a level that will have you wanting even more information. This is the second book of his that I have read, and have passed this particular one onto others to read. It is worth your time to inform yourself.
