The Lost Art of Sacrifice

A Spiritual Guide for Denying Yourself, Embracing the Cross, and Finding Joy

About this item

The Lost Art of Sacrifice leaves behind the soft sentimentalism that many today wrongly associate with Christianity, calling readers to remember – and to embrace – Christ’s unambiguous challenge in Matthew 16: “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”

In these powerful pages, author Vicki Burbach contrasts – as Jesus did – our selfish worldly culture with the way Christians are called to live, illuminating the essential role that sacrifice must play in every worthy human life. Not content with explaining the importance of sacrifice and singing its praises, Burbach ends each chapter with practical, down-to-earth suggestions to help readers cultivate the art of sacrifice in their lives, so that each may find a way to follow Christ as He commands us.

Best of all, she shows that not only is it critical that we each undertake ever more sacrifices, large and small, as we go about our daily lives but that doing so is the path to joy: great joy today and immeasurably greater joy hereafter.

A new approach to real love
It is refreshing to read a book of substance which is how I would describe The Lost Art of Sacrifice. I very much enjoyed the book; the conversational writing style makes for any easy read and the subject is particularly timely for our time and culture. It seems that in our world of choices, with people continually searching for security and relationships failing all around us, we default to trying to control as much of our lives and the lives of those around us as we can. Ms. Burbach clearly points out that seeking for control is often rooted in our pride. That very pride undermines our relationships and our unwillingness to sacrifice for others keeps us from giving and receiving love. In the end, our unwillingness to sacrifice leads us away from what we each seek the most. The book is organized into sections and comes with suggested action items and practical suggestions to help transition from the internal ‘me’ focus that many of us struggle with to one focused to caring for others. A difficult journey, no doubt but one worth making. This book can help guide you on the way. I highly recommend the book.

What a magnificent book for anyone living in our culture! We're told so many times in so many ways to eschew sacrifice, suffering, selflessness, that the value of simple sacrifice has been totally lost. Ms. Burbach deftly delineates the differences between sacrifice and suffering, and spotlights the spiritual good we do with true love of God -- including the sacrifice. For so many reasons -- GET this book.

This book will change the way you think of love! Vicki demonstrates how love and sacrifice are intrinsically intertwined while guiding the reader to incorporate sacrificial love in every aspect of life. She has really found a blind spot on our culture and artfully argues for the necessity of sacrifice. While The Art of Sacrifice is deep and eye opening, it is still easy to read and understand.

Excellent treatment of sacrifice with great application to everyday life
This is a much needed read for today’s world. Getting back to the root of sacrifice, Burbach explains how it is more than just giving something up for an earthly good; it is done for a holy reason and sacrifice, when done out of love, brings true peace and joy. The author creatively weaves together references to pop culture, Scripture, and wisdom from the saints to provide food for thought on the what, why, and how of sacrifice in our daily lives. The book also provides reflection questions, action items, and suggested further reading for each of the chapters which make it excellent not only for incorporating what you read into your life, but also provides a foundation if read in a study group. The chapters are perfectly sized for a daily reading, even if you are busy with work and/or family life. Hidden gems are found in every chapter that will stick with you throughout the day until you are able to pick it up again.
