About this item

When St. Jane Francis de Chantal encouraged St. Francis de Sales to be a bit angrier over the opposition they were facing in starting their religious order, he replied, “Would you have me lose in a quarter hour what has taken me twenty years' hard work to acquire?

St. Francis de Sales had quite a temper when he was young. But over time he learned to convert his angry feelings into virtuous action. He knew that anger never leads to happiness. Worse, it causes tremendous harm to our relationship with God.

In these pages, the wise Fr. Morrow shows you how to pull the rug out from beneath your anger and reclaim a life of peace and grace. You'll come to understand the root causes of angry behavior, ways to heal painful memories, and how to deal well with your hurts and humiliations.

You're not likely to overcome blowups and anxiety through willpower alone. You need tools that help you cultivate the habits that lead to virtuous action. You'll discover here simple ways to influence your behavior, control your impulses, and rebuild tattered relationships.

When you follow the simple advice offered in these pages, you'll be surprised at how quickly you're giving up all desire for revenge, forgiving those who hurt you, and finding peace in your life. You'll also learn:

  • The difference between righteous and sinful anger.
  • Why saying "Well, that's just the way I am” could cost you your soul.
  • The three root causes of every angry outburst.
  • The five stages of healing hurtful memories.
  • How to discipline an angry child.
  • The three actions every Christian MUST take to overcome sinful anger.

This book will not be on my shelf
There are some really good points in this book. It is a very easy read, defines sinful anger and goes through the very practical steps of processing anger, forgiving and developing habits to overcome anger. The problem is that the author very dismissive about abuse and condescending towards women. The chapter titled "Calm Marital Anger" gives women the advice to get "adorably angry" and use childlike exaggeration and say "What's a big brute like you doing picking on a poor, defenseless woman like me?" and to use "masculine" words when speaking to their husband like "big, lug, brute, stiff necked or hairy beast." It states that St. Monica "didn't suffer the bruises from her husband because she knew when to be quiet and when to speak." I was shocked by this language and advice and hope that it is not misused to condone abuse. This advice does not respect the dignity of women, men (who it portrays as silly and vain) or marriage. I sincerely wish this book had been peer reviewed and edited but I cannot have this on my shelf with teens in the house nor can I recommend it to anyone else.

Great read!
This book is spot on. Very well laid out. Easy to follow the logic of the arguments presented by the author. I enjoyed it and it was short enough to weave the reading into my busy life. Provoked a lot of self reflection.

So many practical words of wisdom for finally putting anger behind us and truly accepting our sacrifice to Christ. I have already begun putting it into practice and I honestly feel so much better. Would make an ideal gift for couples who are experiencing marital strife.

Father Morrow is an excellent writer and his spiritual wisdom is invaluable
He provides very practical skills that if applied, can help me change my behavior. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to handle anger from a spiritual perspective. I suggest you try the spiritual perspective versus the secular. I have had anger management training, and pursued other books. The element missing is the alternative behavior's spiritual side, which gives my life a deeper root in stability and fortitude.
