About this item

The organ accompaniments and choral supplement must be used in conjunction with the Pew Edition, which contains more comprehensive indices and complete information about hymn sources, translators, theology, text sharing, melody sharing, copyright, and so forth. Every hymn with notes in the Pew Edition has been given an organ accompaniment. Out of respect for organists who simultaneously serve as cantors, each verse has been written out! The Choral Supplement is marvelous, and adds wonderful solemnity. (Nonetheless, the normal way to involve a congregation in hymn singing is “German style,” that is: unison+organ). The way each verse is written out—for the first time in history—will thrill all those who sing from this book.

Fitting for any choir.
There is much that could be said about a hymnal; simply put, the Brébeuf hymnal is exemplary in an abundance of ways. First it's worth noting this is the *choral supplement* of the hymnal and that as a result it may not include specific information about the hymns that are present in the pew edition. The harmonies chosen for the melodies of each tune are so gorgeous to hear that they have become for me a go-to reference for determining the quality of harmonizations from other sources. The verses are all written out in a way that relieves the singer(s) from the duty of having to memorize their part for each hymn they wish to use for liturgy while still allowing those who care to memorize their parts to sing the same harmonies with an alternate text - be it a Latin text provided in the pew edition or otherwise! I have been singing from this hymnal at my parish for some time now as well as privately enjoying its practicality and useful excellence and as such would highly recommend it for virtually any choir; choral supplement and otherwise!

Beautiful, Singable (!) Choral Hymns!
Prior to obtaining the Brebeuf Hymnal, I used Adoremus exclusively. The problem I had with Adoremus is that many of the hymn harmonizations made zero sense. I love the fact that the Brebeuf Hymnal has gorgeous choral harmonizations that are easy to sightread. It is obvious that the editors put great effort into creating beautiful, singable arrangements of the hymn tunes. Opinions will of course vary on the layout and organization of the hymnal (and personally, I'm not the biggest fan of writing out every verse, though it seems useful for lots of people). But for someone seeking a comprehensive, thoroughly Catholic collection of choral hymnody, it's hard to beat the Brebeuf Hymnal. It has become my one-stop shop for hymns. I would recommend to any Catholic church musician!

I'm sure there are differing opinions in the layout. Some of us really LOVE having each verse written out, especailly those of us who have to cantor and play at the the same time. This makes it so easy. And the hymns are gorgeous.

Sadly, this is a terrible book from what I’ve seen. There is no Latin for the hymns that you wanted originally. I do not like all the verses written out as it is too cluttered, and no real index in the back of the book! Lastly, there is no easy titles at the top of each page. They are mixed in throughout the pages. 1 star.
