The Priests We Need to Save the Church

About this item

While dissolute bishops and priests around the world grab headlines for their untoward words and deeds, too many other unfruitful priests minister as little more than glad-handing bachelors doing social service work.

Top and bottom, is this the Church that Christ intended? Are these the priests we need?

“No!” cries author Kevin Wells in these compelling pages that showcase how heroic priests can faithfully tread the narrow path of holy self-sacrifice first blazed by the apostles themselves. From scores of insightful interviews with modern priests, exorcists, seminary formators, and even disillusioned laity, Wells here draws forth a blueprint for priestly holiness that can once again fill our Church with priests abounding with sincere, supernatural faith, on fire with God's love, and moved by the irresistible impulse to save souls, no matter the cost to themselves.

Reading this book will deepen your own faith and help you understand what all priests, by their vocation, are consecrated and called to be. Giving a copy to your parish priest will help him – and encourage him – as he strives to become a member of the small but growing contingent of holy priests we need.

"The story of the spiritual father Msgr. Thomas Wells, the author’s 'Uncle Tommy,' leaves us wishing we knew him before his murder in 2001. The descriptive power and eternal truths of this book make it a tribute, an indictment, and a prayer for the priesthood."

"This book is a salutary challenge to what can become an all-too-comfortable life. Kevin Wells, and the lives of the exemplary priests he describes, set out to identify and heal the ills of the modern priesthood and set us back on the path to sanctity."

"Kevin Wells' book is the long-overdue dynamite required to wake up a generation of hesitant priests and sleeping laity unwilling to embrace full Catholic identity in a post-Christian culture. "

"An amazing book. Best I have ever read on the priesthood (better than Fulton Sheen on the subject)."

"The Priests We Need to Save the Church" will stand as a testament to future Catholic theologians and laity seeking to understand how this generation rose to its feet after being repeatedly pummeled by clerical abuses. Author Kevin Wells channels the heart and deep faith of his martyred uncle, Msgr. Wells, to demonstrate how Catholic priests win and protect souls for Christ. Contrasting the slouching half-step of many modern priests who have lost their way and are incapable of carrying their charge as good shepherds, Wells provides reference points to the priests who will serve as line commanders in the Church Militant. This is a book of unapologetic Apologetics that should shake many a parish priest from his slumber, encourage today's faithful Catholic with concrete Catholic truths, and raise the bar for Catholic authors hoping to crystallize the angst and hope of the members of the Body of Christ in the early days of this millennium.

This is a beautiful love story! Thank you Kevin Wells! Love is sacrifice and until we understand this, nothing will change. This is the absolute best prescription for the Church I have read to date. The sacrifices of a beloved priest (and our own) will pay dividends into eternity, as is the case with Monsignor Tommy Wells. All we have to do is to look at Jesus on the Cross. That is Love. He is Love. Monsignor's prayer FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK (p.82), professes perfectly our problem: "Dear God, how little we understand when we kiss the feet of the Crucified on Good Friday; how little we understand about the depth of what He suffered; how little we understand when we confess our faith that we are loved by You. Bless us Father; make us grateful, Father; for without His love, we are nothing." Buy this book for your pastor and for all your family and sacrificially and be the solution.
